The Importance of Fire Extinguisher Safety and How to Use Them Correctly

Fire Extinguisher Safety

Fire Extinguisher Safety is extremely important to know in your everyday life, especially in a workplace setting. Employees and staff should be properly trained on how to use a fire extinguisher correctly in case a fire were to break out nearby. This will ensure the safety of others and have a higher chance of being able to solve the problem yourself as oppose to getting emergency services involved and potentially causing panic among other employees or worse, customers.

Different Types of Fire Extinguishers

There are many different types of fire extinguishers, and it is important that you know the difference between each one. There are four classes of fire extinguishers, Classes A, B, C, and D.

  • Class A extinguishers will put out fires in ordinary combustibles such as wood and paper
  • Class B extinguishers are for use on flammable liquids like grease, gasoline and oil
  • Class C extinguishers are suitable for use only on electrically energized fires
  • Class D extinguishers are designed for use on flammable metals

This becomes extremely important to know, just in case you find yourself in a situation where there are multiple fire extinguishers on site and you have to know which one to use. Thankfully, multipurpose extinguishers can be used on different types of fires and will be labeled with more than one class, like A-B, B-C or A-B-C.
